From Preston railway station, the route is approximately 57 minutes long when on time. Using the route via Newton-le-Willows will take 1 hour and 9 minutes.^[1]

Services

The route has a daily hourly service in each direction with 2 trains per hour in the peaks.

Whole route operators

• The route is used to the whole route by Northern under the brand of Northern Electrics. Northern uses class 319s. They will run the Liverpool Lime Street to Blackpool North railway station once the completion of the electrification on the Preston to Blackpool line in 2017.^[2]

Other operators

• TransPennine Express use the route from Preston to Wigan North Western. They leave the route after Wigan to go on the Manchester line (Piccadilly) when going to Glasgow/Edinburgh using Class 350's.
• Virgin Trains use the route from Preston to Wigan North Western similar to Transpenine Express however, they carry on going on the WCML going towards Warrington Bank Quay. They use the route going from London Euston to Glasgow. Virgin Trains also call at Liverpool Lime Street however they use a different route going via Crewe heading towards Birmingham New Street also going to London Euston.
